A truly great lipstick has a timeless quality. With just one swipe, you can instantly elevate your look, even on the most relaxed days. I enjoy keeping a few natural shades handy that are easy to wear and don’t demand much thought. This simple DIY matte lipstick has quickly become one of my go-tos.
Crafted from nourishing butters, waxes, and oils, it offers a smooth texture and a soft, matte look. The formula applies effortlessly, delivering just the right amount of color without feeling heavy or dry. Once you master the process, making your own lipstick is surprisingly quick, straightforward, and deeply satisfying.
Reasons to Create Lipstick at Home
There’s a unique pleasure in crafting your own everyday essentials. While lipstick may seem minor, making it yourself transforms the experience into a mindful endeavor. You have the freedom to select the color, finish, and even the fragrance. Previously, I’ve played with homemade lipstick and produced various shimmery styles I adore, but this time, I decided to create a matte option.
A significant advantage is the ability to customize your creation. You can modify the ingredients to match your preferences perfectly. If you desire a softer formula, simply add a bit more jojoba oil. If you prefer a stronger hue, increase the mica or food coloring. The beauty of DIY skincare is the ability to adjust until it fits your specific needs.

Ingredients for Matte Lipstick
Each component in this recipe serves a crucial function in achieving the desired texture and feel. Here’s how they combine:
- Beeswax provides structure and holding power, creating a light barrier that seals in moisture.
- Emulsifying wax ensures that the mixture remains smooth and consistent, preventing the glycerin from separating from the oils. It serves a similar purpose in my homemade hair conditioner.
- Cocoa butter contributes firmness and a smooth, creamy sensation on the lips, and is naturally rich in antioxidants to keep them soft.
- Mango butter is somewhat lighter than cocoa butter and adds a slip without greasiness. It’s high in vitamins A and E for added moisture.
- Jojoba oil imitates the skin’s natural oils, making it effective not only in lotions but also great for dry lips.
- Glycerin acts as a natural humectant to retain moisture, ensuring the lipstick feels comfortable even in a matte finish.
- Rose kaolin clay lends the lipstick its smooth matte feel and gentle color, assisting in adhesion to the lips.
- Red mica introduces a soft hue and understated shimmer. Additionally, I incorporated some natural red food coloring to deepen the shade without overwhelming glitter from the mica.
- Peppermint essential oil is an optional addition; I use a few drops for a refreshing and cooling sensation. The minty aroma also evokes memories of candy canes during the holiday season!
Here’s the process to create it:
DIY Moisturizing Matte Lipstick
A silky lipstick with a beautiful, matte finish for healthier lips.
Yield: 7 lip balm containers
- In the top portion of a double boiler or a heat-safe glass bowl, mix the waxes, butters, oil, and glycerin. Stir occasionally until everything melts.
- Whisk in the clay, mica, essential oil, and food coloring (if you choose to include it).
- Quickly pour the mixture into your chosen containers and allow it to cool at room temperature until set.
- Once it has cooled, your lipstick is ready for use.
- Feel free to experiment with colorants to find your perfect shade. You can try different mica colors or even cocoa powder for a brownish tint.
Using Your Homemade Lipstick
Although I enjoy producing my own natural lipstick, keep in mind that it may not perform identically to commercial products. It feels soft and moisturizing on the lips, but lacks the synthetic ingredients that prevent color transfer. Therefore, you will need to reapply after eating or drinking.
This lipstick also doesn’t come in the bold and vibrant shades typical of conventional options. Nevertheless, you can still use various micas or even incorporate cocoa powder to tweak the color. The resulting matte lipstick is firm yet remains soft on the lips.
I utilized lip balm tubes for storage, but if you’re looking for something fancier, you can find lipstick molds online. A small jar or tin is also an option, though it may be more challenging to apply due to its firmer texture.
