Essential Steps For Every Parent To Tackle Choking Incidents With Ease

It occurred in a flash. One moment, Dr. Michael Milobsky’s young daughter was happily eating; the next, she was silent. For any parent, this is the scenario you dread: your child choking.

However, Milobsky—a pediatrician and father of seven—didn’t hesitate. In his now-famous TikTok, he shares how he quickly sprang into action, utilizing both his medical expertise and paternal instincts. Within moments, he performed abdominal thrusts, cleared the obstruction, and his daughter was able to breathe once more.

This frightening experience has transformed into a valuable lesson for countless parents. Milobsky’s message stands out: choking incidents are frequent, but with adequate preparation, parents can be equipped to save a life.

Understanding Why Choking Incidents Occur Frequently

Choking ranks among the primary causes of injury and fatalities in young children, notably those aged five and under. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that children are particularly vulnerable during meal times or whenever small items are accessible.

In his video, Milobsky emphasizes that one of the most effective strategies to prevent the leading causes of choking is ensuring children do not eat while walking. “When children eat, they should be sitting and still,” he states. “That’s where I have seen almost all choking events occur–including the one in my own home.”

The issue escalates rapidly. A child who is coughing or gagging might be capable of clearing their airway independently. However, if they suddenly become silent, it signals a complete blockage—and the subsequent seconds are vital.

Key Moves Every Parent Should Be Aware Of

Milobsky underscores three critical life-saving actions every parent can (and should) master:

  • Avoid indiscriminately sweeping your child’s mouth. Attempting to reach into your child’s mouth without visibility can inadvertently push the object deeper into their airway.
  • Back blows: Administer firm, intentional blows between your child’s shoulder blades. As he advises, “hit them hard, as if you’re abusing them—that hard.”
  • Abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich maneuver): For children older than one, encircle their waist, create a fist just below the breastbone, and deliver quick upward thrusts. Don’t get bogged down in perfect technique—what truly matters is responding swiftly and forcefully.

For infants under one, the procedure shifts to a combination of back blows and chest thrusts—preferably practiced in a certified first aid class. Should your child lose consciousness, initiate CPR immediately while seeking assistance.

Taking Further Action

While TikTok can help generate awareness, nothing can replace practical training. Parents can learn pediatric first aid and CPR through agencies such as the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross, as well as through many local hospitals, libraries, and community centers.

Even attending a single class can empower parents to respond confidently during those crucial first moments—when every second counts.

Because while no parent wishes to imagine a choking crisis, Milobsky’s experience serves as a reminder: it can occur in an instant. However, with knowledge and readiness, you can make the difference between disaster and hope.
